1982 – Even throughout his incarceration, Hendra never lost his love for Indonesia. He painted the greatness of Indonesian heroes from different regions and the Indonesian people’s struggle for independence.
One of the most remarkable paintings in the theme of heroism is “Pangeran Diponegoro Terluka”, or “Prince of Diponegoro Wounded at War”. Tragically the painting remains unfinished as Hendra did not have time to paint the face of Prince Diponegoro due to a sudden deterioration of his health that eventually resulted in his death. For Dr. (HC). Ir. Ciputra, the unfinished state of this painting provokes the imagination, as we have to imagine the emotion of the face ourselves, and it is therefore the most favorite painting in all of his collection of Hendra Gunawan. “Pangeran Diponegoro Terluka” is a historic masterpiece that can be admired at the Ciputra Artpreneur Museum, adjacent to the Raffles Jakarta.
